Early Life and Career

Ramon Novarro was born Ramon Samaniego on February 6, 1899, in Durango, Mexico. His father, Mariano Samaniego, was a wealthy landowner and politician. His mother, Leonor Velazquez, was a devout Catholic. Novarro had seven siblings.

Novarro's family moved to Los Angeles, California, when he was a child. He attended St. Vincent's College and Loyola University. After graduating, he worked as a clerk in his father's business.

In 1921, Novarro was discovered by a talent scout and signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). He made his film debut in 1922's The Prisoner of Zenda. Novarro quickly became a star, thanks to his good looks, his romantic roles, and his strong screen presence.

Novarro starred in a number of successful films throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including Ben-Hur (1925),The Student Prince (1927),The Pagan (1929),and Romeo and Juliet (1936). He was one of the most popular actors in Hollywood during this time.

Personal Life

Novarro was a private person who rarely discussed his personal life. He was known to be a devout Catholic and a generous philanthropist. He was also a close friend of actress Dolores del Rio.

In 1926, Novarro was arrested for soliciting sex from a male prostitute. The scandal nearly ruined his career, but he was eventually able to recover. However, the incident cast a shadow over his reputation.

Later Career and Death

In the late 1930s, Novarro's career began to decline. He was no longer the box office draw that he once was. In 1940, he signed a contract with Republic Pictures, where he made a number of low-budget films.

In 1951, Novarro was brutally murdered in his Hollywood home. He was stabbed to death by two men who had been hired to rob him. Novarro's murder was a shocking event that sent shockwaves through Hollywood.

Novarro was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles. He was 52 years old.
